Delphi Awarded New Diesel Business With PSA Peugeot Citroen and Hyundai-Kia
Release Date: September 12, 2001
FRANKFURT, Germany -- PSA Peugeot Citroen and Hyundai-Kia have selected Delphi Automotive Systems (NYSE: DPH) to supply innovative second-generation diesel common-rail systems. Delphi's Multec DCR 1400 allows vehicle manufacturers to develop diesel vehicles that offer performance and refinement that is equivalent to gasoline, with exceptional fuel economy and emissions. This system is thought to be the most advanced currently available.
Production for the Kia KJ 2.9, available in the Carnival and Terran, began in August. Development programs with PSA Peugeot Citroen are for 1.4 liter and 1.6 liter 16-valve engines due for production later this year and into 2002 respectively. During 2001, Delphi also started production of diesel common rail systems for the Renault Clio and the Ford Focus TDCi, both of which have received exceptional reviews.
Multec DCR 1400 is the first diesel direct injection system to provide closed-loop control. Called Accelerometer Pilot Control (APC), the unique Delphi technology allows the Engine Management System to monitor the quality of the combustion. Information from the APC allows injection parameters to be adjusted as conditions change, ensuring that the system is always correctly calibrated.
"We have a world-leading technology that is helping vehicle manufacturers improve fuel economy and vehicle performance and clearly differentiate their products," said Guy C. Hachey, president, Delphi Energy & Chassis Systems. "These two new contracts are further confirmation of our leading position in diesel technology."
Delphi currently has 15 percent of the roughly $4.9 billion USD European diesel injection market and is the only technology supplier world-wide with the capability to provide a complete solution, including injection systems, engine management systems, emissions control and fuel handling systems. To date, Delphi has invested more than $1 billion USD in diesel technology.
