On a X flow Sprint it is not likely you will see flames ( soft cam ) but all the Super Sprint and other engines with high lift cams do. The Rover on trottle body's can do it with high lift cams with great overlap.
I would not bother if you have a light back fire on a cold engine, i do say cold engine. It takes a lot of heat & petrol to light up your airfilter.
The reason for the flames = high lift cams and rich mixture what you need at high rpm but with a 3D ign there is a big improvement aldo at a price.
Never mind the economical side the K boys turn green of envy when you're in a tunnel poping and banging <!--emo&

BTW unless your choke mech. is connected ( very rare ) you do need to pump the acc. to start the engine but every engine is different in the amount of extra fuel it needs to burst into live.
